الثلاثاء, 16 كانون الثاني, 2018

Expanding diplomatic relations between Syria and Brazil is one of the key outcomes of the recent visit paid by Brazilian parliamentary delegation to Syria, Bashar Yazigi, a Syrian Member of Parliament told the Syriatimes e-newspaper on Sunday.

The MP said that a Brazilian ambassador will be appointed as soon as possible in Damascus and this will cement the relations between Syria and Brazil, which is one of the BRICS members.

“The appointment of Brazilian ambassador to Syria will help reactivate parliamentary relations," Yazigi, who chairs the Syrian-Brazilian Friendship Association in the People’s Assembly [parliament] stressed.

“Over the past 7 years, communications between Syrian and Brazilian members of parliaments have been made through the Ministry of Expatriates and Foreign Affairs,” He added, citing that there is a Brazilian-Syrian Friendship Association in the Brazilian parliament.

There are Syrian consul and ambassador in Brazil and the diplomatic representatives of Syria have worked on explaining what is happening in the country before the public opinion in Brazil.

“Actually the recent visit paid by the Brazilian Parliamentary delegation to Syria was the first in 10 years and it was fruitful because the visiting delegation members were briefed on the reality of events in Syria and they would convey what they saw to the Brazilian Parliament,” Yazigi added.

He made it clear that the visiting delegation members were afraid of coming to Syria because media outlets circulate that the situation in Syria is not safe. However, they [the delegation] found that Syria is safe and all news circulated by the mainstream media have been fabricated.

“What the delegation’s members will convey to Brazilian Parliament will be conveyed to Brazilian people,” Yazigi affirmed, indicating that there is a large Syrian community in Brazil.

It has been reported that there are 2.2 million Syrian expatriates in Brazil.

61 investment opportunities

Regarding the meeting held between the visiting Brazilian parliamentary delegation and the Syrian Investment Commission’s Head last week, the MP stated that the delegation was briefed on 61 investment opportunities and they will tell the Brazilian government about them.

“There are four industrial cities in Syria and there are many important and promising opportunities for investors,” Yazigi added, referring to the Syrian state’s decision about the participation of friendly countries in reconstruction process.

The MP went on to say that the Brazilian delegation were also briefed on national reconciliation project that seeks to bring back the misled Syrian persons.

Asked about what Brazil has offered to support Syria in its war against terrorism, Yazigi replied that Brazil is a friendly country and it has sent medical aid to the Syrian people.

Last November, Syrian Health Minister Nizar Yazigi participated in World Hepatitis Summit held in Sao Paulo and met the head and members of the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce.

On January 5, Brazilian Parliamentary delegation headed by Arlindo Chinaglia visited Syria and held talks with Syrian MPs and officials.

The delegations’ head told reporters that their visit aims to enhance parliamentary relations between Syria and Brazil and to closely see the situation in Syria.

He declared that three MPs representing different parties in Brazil support the idea of adopting actual decisions to enhance relations with Syria and to offer support to it in all fields.

In 2012, Brazil recalled all of its diplomatic staff from Damascus, but it has kept a functioning embassy building where local staff have handled mostly consular issues, while a Beirut-based charge d’affaires maintains contact in Damascus and Beirut.
